APPLE / FRUIT SAUCE
Cooking time: 2 hours
Summer is the season of berries in Finland. And apples. In the peak of the season fresh berries can be used as topping for porridges, turned into ice-cream or eaten fresh. With the abundance of the berries it would be nice to have ways to preserve them and enjoy the benefits in the winter time. This is a recipe on apple/berry sauce that can be stored in the fridge up to 12 months.
Ingredients:
Apples
Brown sugar
Cinnamon
Lemon juice
Preparation:
Use as many apples as you have available. Preheat the oven to 150 ºC. Wash the apples and then slice them. Spread them onto a baking tray and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon to your liking. Bake in the oven for about 1,5 hours. Once ready, let the apples cool down and them mash them, adding a tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent the fruits from getting dark. Store the mash in jars and freeze or consume directly.
Alternatively, other fruits or fruit mixtures can be used such as peaches, pears or plums.
